![]() ![]() A lot of NPCs are overwritten, they spew walls of text at you without telling anything specific. In PoE1 you can react in a variety of ways all the time and you're afraid to miss something important. It felt better in NWN2 where it was often clear when you're asking about lore or when you actually discuss something. Pre-expansion PoE2 feels like devs went out of touch with traditional RPG dialogues. Like Durance gives a paragraph or speech, then he's silent for a couple of seconds and continues, but in that time you're supposed to read a paragraph about he's looking at his fiery staff and all that jazz.Īnother thing is that VA forced devs to make their dialogues more to the point. There was certainly a problem when only part of what you can read was voice acted. I can understand how much more time consuming and expensive this would have been though. My other minor gripe about deadfire's voice acting is that the text will say "person x clears their throat/gasps/laughs/sighs" instead of the VA actually doing it. Drove me nuts because you meet both at the same time and they were both annoying lol. Except Maneha and Devil of Caroc, who I'm convinced had the same VA. It was just more subtle since the spoken lines are spread out. ![]() Of course, there was plenty of overlap in PoE too. I'm thinking along the lines of Eder/Aloth, Serafen/random. I'm not saying every NPC needs a unique VA, but a few more VAs with a big range would be able to break up the repetition. The performances are great, but it feels like I'm hearing the same voices over and over. Plus, it's extremely obvious that the narrator and Ydwin have the same VA, which I find distracting.Īctually, that's the biggest gripe I have with the voice acting. Deadfire's narrator is acted really well, but her voice itself doesn't lend enough weight and gravitas to suit the PoE atmosphere, especially where the gods are concerned. The PoE narrator was voice acted too, but was a much better fit for the game imo.
